6 exercise & fat loss myths debunked!

The more you exercise the better Eat your last meal before 8pm If you exercise you can eat whatever you want

1) The more you exercise the better

This could not be further from the truth. The fact is, if you do not get enough rest, you are probably causing your body harm. The body does not build muscle while you are at the gym. Moreover burning calories does not stop as soon as you leave the gym. A lot of fat is burned after you leave the gym as you are left with a higher metabolism after a workout. Your body recovers and repairs itself on rest days and while you sleep. So get adequate rest in order to maximize your gains.

2) Eat your last meal before 8pm

This statement is a generalization and only for people who wake up early and sleep early. Some people work late and will have to adjust their diet accordingly. For example some people prefer working out at 8pm, these people will need to eat after their workout to help the body replenish and recover.  A good rule is to eat two hours before sleeping. This also helps with digestion.

3) If you exercise you can eat whatever you want

Losing fat or gaining muscle does not just depend on exercise. It is actually a combination diet, exercise and genetics. Two people could be doing the same exercise program and could end up with completely different results. For example a person could be very active yet still overweight. Or a person could be very thin yet pretty unhealthy. However, even though exercise alone may not let you achieve you personal goals, regular exercise is one of the most important factors for weight management.

Doing a lot of crunches will get rid of your belly. I have seen so many people at the gym killing their abdominals and yet they complain about having a belly

4) Doing a lot of crunches will get rid of your belly

I have seen so many people at the gym killing their abdominals and yet they complain about having a belly. Doing crunches will help you shape your abdominals; it is NOT going to help you lose your belly. This is because it is quite impossible to lose fat in one spot of your body. Losing fat happens when you burn more calories than you put in your body. Exercise and a good healthy diet is the key to getting the six-pack you have been so eagerly wanting.

5) Wo-men should not lift weights because if they do they will start getting that bulky look

This is one of my favorite. It’s kind of funny, but the fact is it’s extremely unlikely for a wo-man to get that bulky look. In fact men struggle to achieve that look. But the reason wo-men cannot build bulky muscle is the fact that there is a specific type of training that you would need to follow, in addition to eating a lot more calories than you consume. But even more fundamentally wo-men do not have enough testosterone to build bulky muscle like this.

6) Stretching (Static) before exercise prevents injury

I am not going to say stretching is bad for you, in fact it is something you should ALWAYS do. But leave it for the end of your routine. There is no scientific evidence that stretching before exercise prevents injury. But there are studies that show that stretching before exercise can lower your strength and endurance. So it could be argued that stretching before exercise might facilitate an injury rather than prevent it. To prevent injury you should warm up by doing dynamic stretches  or use a treadmill/stationary bike for 5 – 10 mins.

I run for my aerobic exercise. You can run, walk, dance; whatever you prefer. Just be certain to do aerobics at least 3 – 4 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each workout. If you are using HIIT or something on that order, obviously you will be spending less time getting in your aerobics.
