How important is muscle soreness? Is it an indicator of muscle growth?

This is a question I get asked a lot. Most of you gym addicts know what I’m talking about (that pain in your legs the day after a brutal leg workout or an intense cardio session)

Muscle soreness could be a consequence of your muscles trying to adapt, but it is not necessary.  One could experience severe muscle soreness

“ I wasn’t sore the day after the workout, will I still make gains?”

This is a question I get asked a lot. Most of you gym addicts know what I’m talking about (that pain in your legs the day after a brutal leg workout or an intense cardio session). Beginners often experience this muscle soreness.
It is commonly believed that muscle soreness is necessary for muscle growth. Unfortunately this is not true…If only muscle soreness was the goal of the workout.
If that were the case I would ask my clients to perform 300 crunches, 300 push ups and 300 body-weight squats. The fact of the matter is your muscles won`t grow if you don`t load them properly, so volume training is very important for muscle growth.
Muscle soreness could be a consequence of your muscles trying to adapt, but it is not necessary.
One could experience severe muscle soreness, but this could be from over-training and will lead to muscle breakdown.

Bottom line: Muscle soreness is not the goal of the workout, adaptation is. A Common side effect of adaptation is subtle muscle soreness.

I run for my aerobic exercise. You can run, walk, dance; whatever you prefer. Just be certain to do aerobics at least 3 – 4 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each workout. If you are using HIIT or something on that order, obviously you will be spending less time getting in your aerobics.
